History of HD Woodson HS
Deanwood is a historically African American community going back to 1871. In the 1920’s it housed DC’s Suburban Gardens Amusement Park. Nannie Helen Burroughs established her National Training School for Women and Girls here and Marvin Gaye was born and raised in Deanwood. Many of the homes were built by African American architects, H. D. Woodson chief among them, for families who have lived there for generations. Deanwood lies in a leafy valley watered by Watts Branch, a tributary of the Anacostia.
